Hong Leong Yamaha Motor Celebrates Silver Jubilee of Balik
Kampung Road Safety Campaign to Promote Greater Road Safety

SHAH ALAM, 8 APRIL 2023 – In collaboration with Malaysia Motorcycle Scooter Dealers’ Association (“MMSDA”), Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (“HLYM”) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its annual Balik Kampung Road Safety Campaign, which aims to empower motorcyclists in
Malaysia to ride home safely for the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations. The campaign, which starts from today, kicked off at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Shah Alam, and will continue at three other prominent local universities and more than 200 Yamaha dealerships until 19 April 2023. The campaign’s launching ceremony was officiated by Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Raduan Che Rose, Chairman of UiTM’s Board of Directors.
Hong Leong Industries Bhd (“HLI”) Group Managing Director Dato’ Dr Jim Khor Mun Wei shared that the campaign remains crucial in raising road safety awareness in Malaysia. He noted that while the Malaysia Road Fatalities Index had decreased year-on-year to 1.97 deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles in 2019 from a high of 3.4 deaths in 2010, the highest road fatalities in the same period involved motorcyclists at 59% (Ministry of Transport Malaysia, 2023)1
.
“At HLI, we prioritise product safety as a key focus area in our sustainability pillar. As a subsidiary of HLI, HLYM’s Balik Kampung Road Safety Campaign is core to our social responsibility in advocating and driving awareness of safe riding to our customers. At the same time, as a motorcycle manufacturer, we have a major role to play in promoting safe riding awareness within our communities. We hope that this campaign will inspire like-minded industry players to embark on similar programmes for their customers to enhance road safety awareness overall in the country,” he added.
The Balik Kampung Road Safety Campaign is the longest-running annual road safety campaign conducted in collaboration with motorcycle dealers in the motorcycle industry, to raise awareness of road safety, especially during peak traffic periods like the festive seasons, by emphasizing the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, adhering to speed limits and safe defensive riding techniques. The campaign also features various activities such as safety riding courses, test rides and free motorcycle inspections. Additionally, during the campaign period, more than 200 authorised Yamaha Quality Service centres will be offering free motorcycle service for 48 customers on a first-come, first- served basis. Customers who send their motorcycles for this free service will stand a chance to participate in a lucky draw contest to win the grand prize of a Yamaha EZ115.
